The Christian Contingent

Note: If you have not seen Charlie Kirk speak and engage on campuses, please watch some video of him speaking. His assassination is the JFK, MLK, 9/11, of this generation.

Why are we upset? We are upset because he was killed just for standing for what we believe in. For doing what God calls all of us to do. Are they gunning for me next? Yes, but, we can go forth in the knowledge that God is sovereign.

Why was Charlie Kirk killed? What did he say or believe that was different than you? Remember, we do not fight against flesh and blood, but “against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 6:12). They shot him because they do not know your name. They should know all of our names. We all should be bold and forthright with our belief. Peter and John were admonished, prayed for boldness, and later beaten. To which they went “rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His name” (Acts 5:41). Are we bold? Are we effective? It was not flesh and blood which killed him, it was the spirit of the age. He was a representative of what we all should be doing. He was effective. Charlie Kirk is a MARTYR. He set his “mind on things above, not on things on the earth” (Colossians 3:2b). A martyr for a political party? Possibly, but it was not a political force which killed him. It was not flesh and blood.

Where is the boldness of this church (Acts 4:29,31,41-42)? Where is the leading in everyday life (Matthew 28:18-20)? If you separate “Everyday life” from the church, you are cementing the idea that church is separate from our life. It is not!!! It should be a part of everyday life (Deuteronomy 6:6-7). If the church separates itself from everyday life, it becomes useless as a guide for life.

We are to get louder in our love and ethical treatment of others. We are to get bolder in proclaiming the love of Jesus and His truth, someplace outside of the church’s walls.

I can appreciate the sentiment of not wanting to keep talking about Charlie’s murder when people, especially young people are watching it on loop. BUT, they need some leader to take them from the sorrow and senselessness of the murder and into a healthy action. They need to be led from the sadness they are having into a better way of dealing with this. All people need to be led to a place where they can process his murder in a Biblical way. What does the Bible say about what happened? Not just Luke 12:4-34, but 2 Timothy 1:7; Romans 8:15; Acts 4:29; Philippians 4:6; Psalm 23:4, 34:4, 56:3-4, 91:7; Proverbs 29:25; 1 John 4:18; Joshua 1:9; and many more! We should seek the good and not evil: Psalm 34:10; Amos 5:14; so do not glorify what happened, but put it to bed. Give the people another way to express what they are feeling.

Direct the energy that was released, do not just say, “Do not fear.” How do I not fear? What does that look like? What do I say to people who mock the murder? What do I say to people who do not know why I am so upset over this? Give us something concrete that we can put our minds to work understanding. Give us some sort of closure so we do not keep watching the murder on loop, so that we have a way forward. A Godly way forward. What are the alternatives if the church does not lead?

What was said Sunday came off as being totally disconnected from the real world. The way to diffuse something is to shine light on it. The church did not help me heal or deal with what happened last week. The church did not help me cope with the loss, other than, “Do not fear.”

There was nothing said about Charlie’s life, the possibility of Heaven, or Hell. Where is his final destination? Was his life a good life that should be copied or emulated? Was he speaking out as we should? There was no talk of such a mighty example. Of such a glowing example. Unfortunately that leaves our heroes to be given to us by society, not the church.

The Scripture in Luke that we covered on Sunday, cried out to me for a correlation to the happenings this week. We NEED for our church to lead us in how we are to live our lives in this world. HOW did the sermon this week lead us into a life lived in response to the enemy killing someone who is like us. We need a church that will lead us in the fight against the enemy, not just check a box. We need a church that is relevant, not socially disconnected. Yes, he took a political position, but that was not all he did. He did not really debate politics; he debated the enemy and the world view supported by the enemy. Isn’t that what we are called to do? He lived out his Christian life in an area of speaking out against the enemy’s world view. We live out our Christian lives in an area of ??? He brought Christ into that arena, and was shot for it. Should we bring Christ into the arena where we live our lives??? HOW DO WE DO IT??? We should have had the church lead us in what that looks like. Flesh and blood is not the reason for his murder, we should not fear anything aside from God. Yes, that is what was said last Sunday. But was it enough? Was it enough to lead people from death to life?
